It is common to claim that the God of the Bible punishes people for what they do (or don’t do), especially the God of the Old Testament. Indeed, in many Bible translations we at times encounter the word “punish” with God as subject (e.g., the NRSV in Exod. 20:5, “punishing children for the iniquity of parents”).
